MKV is Matroska file format also called as container format, designed to hold codec of several type i.e. video, audio, subtitles. Has editing features and primary purpose is to create a universal format for multimedia storage with the benefit of completely open source. Mkv videos contains compressed video and audio with encoder which is why they cannot be normally played on players, if you want to play it codec or coder/decoder is required, commonly called as MKV converter software and since your system is Mac you need to have Mkv converter for mac, which can convert Mkv into desired formats and makes it ready for playback.
